A social enterprise with a better program needed a way to explain why “better” mattered — especially when free courses were everywhere.

Free and cheap options existed everywhere. Most of them didn’t stick.

Free and cheap options existed everywhere. Most of them didn’t stick.
Free and cheap solutions exist everywhere. Community centers run courses, municipalities run courses, family members volunteer as tech support. And most of it doesn’t stick. Large groups, no personal attention, instructors with no clue how adults learn, no follow-up. People finish a free course and three weeks later they’re back to asking their grandkids to “fix the WhatsApp.”

The program was better. The marketing had to make that visible.

The founder had spent ten years refining what actually makes digital skills stick for older adults: emotional coaching, instructors trained in andragogy, and a personal interface tracking each learner’s progress and confidence over time. All of it real, all of it effective, and none of it visible in the marketing.

The program serves very different buyers, so I wrote distinct messaging for each instead of one generic pitch: older adults heard digital independence and dignity, working professionals heard workplace relevance, and organizations heard a productivity case. Same method underneath, different version of the story.

Lead quality changed noticeably. Inquiries started coming from people who understood what they were paying for and why, which showed up in conversion, in referrals, and in closed sales. The founder has since brought me back for additional projects.

The problem behind the program
The world moved online. Older adults were left behind.

Banking, healthcare, government services, staying in touch with grandchildren: all of it moved online. The people it moved away from fastest are older adults. In the US, one in four adults over 65 doesn’t use the internet at all, compared to near-universal use among younger adults, and in Europe, only 25% of older adults have basic digital skills or better.
